Rust Summer 2026 Updates: Workbench Upgrades, M16A2 and Ballistic Armor

A summary of the May and June 2026 major updates: workbench upgrade system, Mortar, M16A2, ballistic armor and the Seismic Sensor.

Summer 2026 was busy for Rust: two major updates clearly shifted the crafting, combat and defense meta. Here are the headlines that directly affect your game.

Forced monthly wipe reminder: the July force wipe landed on Thursday, July 2, 2026. For all wipe dates, see the wipe schedule guide.

May 2026: workbench upgrades and the Mortar

The workbench upgrade system was the star of this update. Workbenches are no longer static: slot upgrade items into T1/T2/T3 benches to boost crafting, research and bench buffs. This reshapes the craft economy and in-base priorities.

  • Mortar: a new siege/area weapon was added.
  • Vending machine UI was overhauled; buying and selling flows read more clearly.

June 2026: "Built Different"

The June update shifted the combat and armor meta:

  • M16A2: a new assault rifle; a strong mid-to-long option added to the weapon pool.
  • Ballistic armor tier: a new protection class with Ballistic Helmet, Vest and Leg Armor.
  • Seismic Sensor: a new item that detects nearby explosions; a strong addition for raid early-warning.
  • In-monument barricade deployment and visual feedback for the no-build radius were added.

What it means for you

  1. Rethink your craft layout: workbench upgrades are now a priority investment.
  2. Add a Seismic Sensor to your defense; early warning is valuable for solos and small teams. See the electricity guide for setup.
  3. Re-evaluate your fight distance against the new armor and M16A2; the PvP guide still holds: short bursts and positioning come first.
