A "wipe" is a reset of a Rust server: the world is regenerated and everyone starts equal. There are two main types, and knowing the difference decides when you start.
Map wipe
The map is regenerated with a new seed. All bases, TCs, stashes, vehicles, dropped items and inventories are cleared. But your learned blueprints (BP) are kept — your tech progress stays.
Blueprint (BP) wipe
Everything a map wipe does plus everyone's learned blueprints are erased. You start at Tier 1 and re-research everything. The tech race restarts from zero — the fairest moment for new players.
Protocol wipe: when an update changes the network protocol version, every server on the old version must update. Facepunch's monthly forced wipe is effectively a protocol wipe.
The forced monthly wipe
Facepunch ships a mandatory update on the first Thursday of each month, usually around 7 PM GMT. Nearly all servers map-wipe that day. BP wipes have no fixed schedule; they usually land with major updates every few months and are announced ahead.

When should you join?
- Right at wipe: maximum competition, everyone equal, hot monument race. For experienced players and teams.
- A few hours later: a calmer start after the first chaos. Easier for solos and new players.
