The first hour in Rust can shape the whole wipe. Good news: a solid first day needs the right order, not complex tactics. This plan takes you from the beach to a locked stone base.
If you die, do not panic: with a sleeping bag down you can return. Dying is normal in Rust; the goal is to lose less each time.
First ten minutes: basic gathering
- Break beach rocks and low nodes; collect stone, wood and cloth.
- Quickly craft a stone hatchet and stone pickaxe; your gather speed multiplies.
- Place a sleeping bag (cloth) — that is your respawn point.
- Eat mushrooms and berries, drink from a river against thirst.
Picking a location
Stay slightly away from main roads and big monuments, in tree cover but within walking distance of a recycler. Too open makes you visible from afar; too remote and you cannot find resources.
Your first base: a stone 2x1
Your first goal is not flashy, it is safe. The classic start is a 2x1: one storage room, one lock room.
- Place a Tool Cupboard (TC) and add wood/stone; it prevents decay and claims the area as yours.
- Put a metal door and lock on the entrance. A wooden door will not survive the first night.
- Keep valuables in a separate box, not in the TC room.
A stone wall is 500 HP and will not fall to a hatchet; a wooden base can be opened by hand. Move to stone at the first chance.
Surviving the first night
- In the dark, dim your flashlight instead of a torch; light gives you away.
- Do not run toward gunfire. New players die most by joining other people's fights.
- A small pistol or bow + arrows is enough; the first night is about seeing sunrise, not fighting.
Next steps
A locked base means the foundation is set. From here: recycle for scrap, unlock a workbench and gear up. Read the farming guide next and the base building guide for durable design. Follow the wipe schedule for a fresh start.
